Question
How do I prevent my silver beads from tarnishing?

Renee, I would suggest using bead bins you can find at arts and crafts stores. Be certain they close tightly and for added protection, keep the stored beads away from moisture. You can also use non-tarnishing jewelry strips or a trick I found good is using the little silicone packets that come in a pair of shoes. They absorb moisture.

Keep them away from water as well when you are washing your hands or taking a shower, take off your jewelry first. water sometimes causes tarnishing on costume jewelry if made with gold or silver plated jewelry.

Question
Is all Sterling Silver .925 grade?

answer 1
Beader girl, you may already have the answer to this question but "no" all sterling silver is not .925 grade. There are higher grades of sterling silver and pure sterling silver which tend to be much softer and easy to scratch and "mar" up. However, when using sterling silver, make sure the grade is at least .925 grade.

Yes, Sterling Silver and .925 are synomymous. Coin Silver is .900 and occasionally one sees higher grade .950 Silver. The .925 comes from the fact that Sterling Silver is 925 parts per 1000 or 925/1000 pure silver.

for a metal to be qualified sterling, it must have a minimum 92.5% pure silver. Generally, if a piece isn't marked somewhere with "sterling", or .925, it is not.

Yes. Sterling means 925parts/1000 pure silver. Hill Tribe Silver is a higher grade though.

Question
I am trying to find a similiar bracelet to the pandora brancelet
I am looking to find a bracelet similiar to the pandora bracelet. You can add various charms to it for different occassions. It also has the spacers so that you can seperate the charms. The caprice bracelet is similiar but the clasp is different. The pandora bracelet has a ball on one end and a screw bit on the other. Could I do the same thing with the caprice bracelet and if so what size bead charms should I get to go around it?

I think that the caprice bracelet is as close to the pandora that you are going to get. Pandora does make a lobster clasp one as well as the screw clasp. I have been looking at this also.

answer 2
The caprice bracelet's ends screw off so you can add large holed beads onto the chain. I'm not sure which size bead charms you would need though. You could always purchase one and try it out.

They have a great return policy here if it doesn't work out.

I am not very familiar with the Pandora bracelets, but I believe you can use a omega chain (that may even be the chain style they use, however, not sure on that). Look at the size of the chain (diameter) and the size of the hole for the beads that you want on the bracelet. If the chain is 2mm and the bead has a 3mm hole, it will fit on the chain. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help. I hope this helps though. :)

I've been beading for about 9 years now and highly recommend that you only store sterling silver "anything" with sterling silver. Although in the past I've stored mixed metals without them tarnishing, I just prefer knowing what metals I'm using on what design, i.e. tarnished sterling silver can be mistaken for gunmetal to the naked eye.

Silver tarnishes over time unless you take preventive measures. I keep each type of finding in a small individual poly bag with an anti-tarnish tab (see CSTRIP-1).
Then I group different types of findings in larger poly bags.

I store my metals separately. Silver tarnishes anyway so why take the chance. Also, I need to keep my SS findings separate from silver plate items for pricing reasons.

Question
How do you use the "cones?"

answer 1
Tinker, "cones" can be used to gather multiple strands of beads on a necklace or bracelet as a finishing touch (be sure the multiple strands gather nicely into the cones) or can also be used as a topper to a pair of earrings, even better if the beads are tear-drop shaped with the cone fitting snug onto the bead.

Primarily, they are used to gather mutiple strands together at the ends before adding the clasp. There are several ways/techniques todo this. I also like to use the smaller ones above a bead or pearl as a dangle, say, for earrings. Or a larger one to make a tassel.

To use an open cone to to finish the ends of a multi-strand piece of jewelry, attach all of the strands to a loop in an eye pin. Thread the eyepin through the large side of the cone, so that the loop slides into and all the ends are hidden. Make a simple loop in the other end of the headpin, and attach your clasp.

How do I make my own extender chain?

answer 1
Zedd, you may already have your answer to this question, however you can make your own extender chain by buying inches or feet of 3mm or larger cable chain and adding it as an extender. The length of the extender should depend on how much more you want the design to extend from it's original creation. Also, a special touch to an extender is to add a small bead onto a head pin to the last loop in the chain that you use.

Cut a piece of chain to the desired length and then finish it as you would a necklace by putting a spring or lobster clasp on one end and a clasp ring on the other end. You can attach and remove this from your necklace with no tools necessary.

You can make your own extender chain by cutting our bulk chain by the foot into 2" increments using a nipper tool. You can also add a bead on the end for some added flair using a simple loop or wire wrapped loop.

Bug, most bead sellers don't tell you what size hole is in a bead unless is it a "spacer" bead. I suggest Googling "large hole beads" and see what pops up or visit bead stores and bead shows in your area and take your necklace with you. Hope this helps.

For beads with a larger hole, we would recommend checking out our silver-lined Venetian beads:

or the CRYSTALLIZED™ 5041 Faceted Large Hole Roundelles:

If you have any questions on the hole size of a bead, you are more than welcome to contact our Customer Service department with the product code for the bead and we can measure the hole size for you.

Question
How do you know which bead cap to use on which bead size?

answer 1
Rahl, based on my experience, I would suggest using the same size bead cap as the bead you are using. If you use a cap size "smaller" than the bead, it will alter your design. Using a "larger" cap than the bead will over-power the bead itself. Hope this helps.

Some of the bead caps state their size in mm. They fit that same size bead.

If, like me, you're frustrated that not all the bead caps show mesurements...try this...select one of each of the styles you like. Keep them in their Artbeads.com bag with the item number. Then when you plan a project with bead caps, go to your stash to find the perfect fit by trying them (in person) on your beads. Place an order for the specific caps you need and in no time...you're swanky caps fit your fab beads!

Based upon my experience with pandora style bracelets, the girth of the chain appears to be about 3mm in size. I would suggest selecting beads that have at least a 4mm size hole or larger or search for what's called "large hole" beads. Hope this helps.
