Question
Why do my crimp tubes slide off?

Either your tube is too large or your stringing material is too small. I like to use nylon coated wire for this reason. The nylon helps hold the crimps in place as well as protect the wire.

It could be one or more of several reasons.

You may not be crimping the tube tight enough.

The wires may not be separated enough inside the tube. They need to not be touching so that the tube is tight in between them when crimped.

Your wire may not be the right kind... I like Beadolon 7 or 19 strand nylon coated wire.

Your tube may be too big (or wire too small).

If it's still not working this video may help (may have to copy and paste the address into your browwer):

Are you...
- using crimps that are too big for your project? I'm still learning, but I usually use 2x2mm crimp tubes with 0.015 wire. Measure them and see.
- making sure that the wires run parallel within the tube and that when it's folded over, you have one wire on each "side"?

Question
What is the difference between a crimp bead and a regular bead?

Crimp beads are used to 'crimp' wire together / down so that you can finish a project strung on a type of beading wire so the beads are secure and will not come undone. Regular beads are for ornate purposes, used to decorate, or even perhaps add some space between other beads.

A crimp bead is used to end your strand. It is smashed flat to hold the wire in place.

answer 3
Crimp beads are very small metal beads that are designed to "crimp" (pinch) onto stringing wire to secure the wire (usually to a clasp) using a special pair of pliars made for crimping. Here's the tutorial video that explains how to use the crimp bead...

This describes any allow that contains at least 92.5% silver. The rest is usually (at least here in the United States, anyway) allows of copper or brass). Items in the U.S. must be at least 92.5 % silver to be marketed as .925 Sterling Silver.

925 means that it is sterling silver. Sterling is 925 parts per 1000 pure silver, just like 14k gold is 14 parts per 24 parts pure gold. Hope that answers your question!

Question
Why does my silver tarnish?
asked 2 years, 11 months ago

answer 1
The main cause of tarnishing of silver jewelry is a trace of hydrogen sulfide gas in the air. The tarnish is due to the contact with sulphur compounds in the air. To help prevent your silver jewelry from tarnishing so quickly - store it in an air tight container such as a zippie-bag or an air tight plastic container. Once your silver jewelry does start to tarning - and it will over time w/out constant wear - wipe it clean with an artbeads.com polishing cloth.

Cardboard, paper and certain dyes leach fumes that damage silver. Moisture is also a factor. Silver should be stored in a zip-seal bag in a wooden, stone or plastic box somewhere other than your bathroom. To protect it from perfumes and lotions, make it the last thing you put on in the morning, and the first thing you take off at night. If it is a piece you don't wear daily, wipe it down with a soft dry cloth before storing it to remove any body oils. Also be aware that things like rubber and latex will actually burn your silver, even through several layers of plastic, so keep them as far apart from each other as possible.

Eyepins act as a link. The "eye" part becomes a loop to attatch more to. Headpins are what you'd use to terminate that link.

The learning center has clear instructions on how to make a wire wrap loop. You will understand headpins once you see the video.

Jump rings - open ones or closed ones - can me used to link together many different types of jewlery components such as linking chain to a wrapped loop that has a bead on it. Jump rings can also be used as the circle closer to clasp your lobster clasp to, as well and to use as a 'floater' bead if you want movement in your strung designs.

Question
Why do the toggle clasps on my bracelets always come undone?
asked 2 years, 11 months ago
by
renee
on Silver Components

Answers
answer 1
Usually toggle clasps come undone for one of two reasons: 1 - the straight 'arm' portion that goes through the circle portion is shorter than it technically should be to be completely secure and 2: wearing long sleaves or putting sweaters and jackets off/on while wearing bracelets with toggle clasps causes the long arm of the toggle to catch and become 'undone' while you're wearing it. Hint: use a lobster type clasp on bracelets you cherish. Or, during months you are wearing winter type clothing with long sleeves, avoid bracelets with toggle clasps to help avoid this problem.

I find that once I've added the crimp and the cable thimble, my bracelets can be too long...making the toggle un-toggle. You really need to figure the length of all this into your stringing. Also, bend your bracelet in a circle before you finish it to be sure it's not strung too tightly.

Some find them easier to fasten than the "Honey, can you help me with this?" spring-ring clasp. Even with my non-dominate hand I can manage a toggle.

It certainly can be a design element, there are some beautiful toggles available!

My understanding is that it's one and the same, but I'm not schooled in gold - so you might want to ask your local jeweler or find the answer online. GIA online is a good souce of info if you need a place to start your search.
