While the product description states that the antique finish will wear off, I am wondering how the plating holds up?

yes, it will stay the same, do not use sterling silver cleaner on it, this will cause flaking & pitting over time. You can use flat black model paint & a q-tip or toothpick to put the antique finish back!dab the paint where needed & wipe the excess away. Hope this helps.

I have heard that pewter can be dangerous due to lead content. Is this true of your beads?

Although lead has been in pewter in the past, new production from 2005 and on has made pewter lead free in the jewelry industry.
