I have owned every kind of professional and point n shoot camera. I found the perfect camera for close up shots.
I just bought the SONY Cyber-shot Camera. This is considered a smart camera. I found it at Best Buy.
Not only does this have Auto Macro but you can zoom in AFTER you take the picture to get even closer, and it does not loose resolution. I took a picture of very small stones from 2' away, then zoomed in after the picture was taken. It looks like I was looking through a microscope. This worked better than my pro Nikon D 80. And it is for the average user. I would recommend this to anyone. The ring on the finger was with my old camera, the other was taken from my Sony. I should have used better lighting on the better shot.

Like the others who've responded have suggested, you really only need the macro function on any camera. I have a cheap little point-and-shoot digital, and the macro feature takes beautiful, detailed photos.
The most important elements of photographing your jewelry are the lighting and angle. I like to go to a window that lets in plenty of light and use a large, neutral flat surface (I use a coffee table book) to lay my jewelry on, or an interesting prop. When you photograph your item, get down on its level rather than taking the photo from directly above it. That will create such a more interesting photo, showing off the piece's character.

Almost any digital camera will work for your purposes. For jewelry shots, you'll want to use the macro setting, usually signified by a little flower icon.

I would also strongly suggest investing in a light box and 2 small lights. Never use the camera flash - it causes harsh shadows and lots of glare. You can find a small, portable light box setup, including lights and a tripod, for about $20 or so if you look around, and it was the best investment I ever made.

I've used the scanner before, and all I can say is that the results are less than satisfactory. You get no depth, weird shadows, and you can't control the area it focuses on. While it may work OK for projects that lie flat, if you have any kind of dimension to your bead work you'll be endlessly frustrated with it.

I have a flat-bed scanner I use instead of taking photos. It can work very well instead of trying to get a photo box and a camera and lighting, etc.

answer 9
You need one that has a MACRO setting and it would be best if you could turn the flash off. I have a $200 Canon that handles this well, but have to study the manual so if you are a newbie to cameras, ask the clerk for a simple one.

What do you use cones for?

I use cones to make elegant earrings. If its a wide bottom I put a 8mm round swarovski crystal, put your pin thru the crystal, then thru the cone. Then on top of cone now add a 6mm bicone or 6 mm round swarovski crystal both look nice. Loop your pin then attach and ear ring hook and wha-la!!!

I use them for the feather earrings that I make...the feathers & beads are wrapped with wire, then the wire excess is drawn up through the cone, make a loop and attach to an ear wire.

Cones work great for ending multi-strand necklaces or bracelets... attach a closed jump ring to the bottom of an eye pin, and crimp the ends of several strands of beads around the jump ring. Slide the eye pin through the cone so that the jump ring and the crimped ends are hidden inside the cone, add a small bead onto the eye pin for design, and make a wrapped loop onto the end of your clasp. For Example: http://www.artbeads.com/copper-persuasion-necklace.html

They are used on cord or viking knitted wire as the end caps for making bracelets and necklaces.

You can use cones like you would use a bead cap, on larger focal beads, or perhaps to start and finish a multi-strand necklace. The cone acts as a smooth transition from wire to clasp. I've also used cones on either side of a pendant, narrow sides together facing out. Hope that helps!

That's a nice cone you've asked about. There are different ways to use them but most often, they're a transition piece between multi strands and a clasp or, a single strand. One design (I like a lot) is when a necklace has a section in the front with multi strands so they show with an open blouse. The cones hide the function of bringing all the strands together with a jump ring or an eye pin. Then the narrow end has a chain or beaded strand to finish the necklace off without the bulk under the collar a chunky necklace would have.

I've used this cone in a similar way for a watch. There wasn't room on the watch loops for all the ends of the strands to attach so I gathered them on an eye pin and made a wrapped loop onto the watch.

There are all kinds of ideas (like this) in the Learning Center section here. Step by step directions to all kinds of pretty things. That's how I learned...hope this helps!

I also had this problem, and was unable to visualize the size of different beads, until I bought a digital caliper, which shows both inches and mm's. I can't recommend it more strongly.

If you go on the Bead Style magazine website, under Notebook 1, article Measuring Up, the first page have the bead diameter chart that you can print. I use it to visualize the size of beads that I want to buy.

You've probably seen the chart for Swarovski colors. Artbeads.com doesn't offer any other charts for "Swaros". The sizes are listed for each of the sew on items...in metric.

How do I know if these are single items, in strands or what?

When you're viewing an item, on the right side, above the "add item box" will discribe if it's a single bead, giving it's size, a strand, how long it is along with the bead size or in some cases, how many grams of beads come in a packet.

They give a discount if you buy more of one thing...be sure to notice that!

Since bracelets are typically exposed to heavier wear than necklaces, we would recommend using a 49 strand jewelry wire in a .019 size for extra strength. Our design team uses ZambaPro 49 .019 Jewelry Wire in our free design ideas, as we have found ZambaPro wire to be exceptionally flexible and the most kink resistant.

I would look for the large splitrings that are used for keys - you can use an old one - or buy a cheap one and take off all you don't want to use. Then you could attach a short piece of heavy chain with a regular large split riing and the items you want on the keychain for the breast cancer awareness.
