Question
Creative ways to use large hole bead for earrings?
I'd like to use lampwork beads to make some earrings. Do you have any ideas on how to get around the large bead hole? I like to use 24 gauge headpins.

Thanks!

Put a round 2-3 mm silver or gold bead on each side of the hole and wrap your wire down to the bead.
Or I use a 4 mm clear swarovsky crystal bicone on each side [or just on one side if you want] and put a big seed bead or a small round glass bead on the other side-or a small round pearl-or gemstone 4mm or smaller..

When I'm stringing beads with large holes (weather on wire string or pins), I'll string a tiny bead first, then place the larger bead over-top (so that the tiny bead is actually 'inside' the hole of the larger bead). You cannot see the tiny bead underneath, and it keeps the larger bead from moving around. I've used mostly crimp beads and seed beads for this. You could try a clear, crystal seed bead, so it is transparent.

Lisy, I like to use the clear rubber stoppers for the backs of earrings. They fit perfectly into the holes of the large lampwork beads and any large bead. sometimes I also use the smaller white rubber stopper and just cut it to size. It will keep the bead straight on the headpin or wire. Clear "Rubber" Earwire Clutch
Clear "Rubber" Earwire Clutch Length 3mm, Width 3.5mm

Lisey, whether your headpin has a flat head or a ball, you need to use a heishi spacer or a bead cap with a hole small enough that the head of the headpin will not go through and big enough in circumference to cover the hole of the lampwork bead. For interest,. bead caps are nice addition on the top hole of the bead to frame your bead. Another way to make your earrings interesting is to flip a bead cap around away from the bead and place a lovely crystal or pearl accent bead that compliments the colors in your lampwork inside the cup of the inverted bead cap making a little flower like shape.. The correct size bead cap or heishi should cover the holes of your lampwork beads. Any variations of the above will work. With your two uniquely handmade beads and all the beautifully scrolled beadcaps, interesting heishi spacers, gem stones, pearls, new cool shapes and awesome colors in Swarovski crystal available in todays market, you should have no trouble finding the right combination and accent beads to make your lampwork beads pop. Good luck creating your earrings that will be uniquely yours and you will love to wear. Happy beading Lisey!!

you can put a small bead on the headpin before the lampwork bead in order to stop them just sliding of the head pin.
depending on the size of your head pin, you could go to a craft store and find small glass beads, E beads, or silver beads.

How do I attach a donut or flat pendant?

There are "donut hole bails." You can gently squeeze them around the material. They come together at the top where there are 2 holes which line-up (use as one) for stringing. There are also "Ice pick" bails, which work like an...you guessed it, an ice pick. It has 2 pincers, one in the fron, one in the back. They squeeze together into the pendant hole and have a bail at the top. Watch WHICH WAY the ice pick grabs: side to side or front to back.

Question
Are the Swarovski beads dangerous to wear due to the lead content?

Not unless you plan on licking it or holding it excessively and then eating something with your fingers, the lead content is usually very slight. So it shouldn't be a problem.

It depends. If you are going to wear it for a long period of time and not take it off, then I wouldn't worry. If you are going to be active and you might end up taking it off then I would suggest you be cautious where you put it, especially if there are little kids around that are looking for something to suck on.

California is overly worried about this topic. I was afraid to make children's jewelry because of the concerns out there. After talking with medical professionals I conclude that Swarovski crystals are safe unless we are ingesting them. It is important for all of us to stay current with all health warnings on crystals and other jewelry componants.

At Artbeads.com, in our Learning Center, we actually have a chart called TOHO™ Color Warnings. This chart lists the colors that may be changed by bleach or oxidation, colors that may rub off with strong friction and colors that may fade with direct sunlight(UV's). Here is a link to that chart so you are able to view it easier:

Use real metal. I have been using seed beads for 10 years and I have never had a problem with any losing their shine. Since you are having this problem, use real metal... silver, hematite, gold, etc. They are expensive, but will maintain their finish.

I've had the same issue with some beads, and it's hard to know looking at them online. I've found it helpful to see if the colour is inside the bead, as opposed to outside where it can wear off. There are some nice Toho beads like that(maybe others too).

difference between swarovski and glass beads

Swarovski beads are lead crystal, which gives them the same clarity and radiance as is the difference between lead crystal stemware and plain glass.

Additionally, Swarovski crystals are cut, whereas most glass beads are pressed or blown into shape.

Swarovski products and beads: How these are made is a closely guarded secret but some of their products are made with lead and some are coated with special coatings. One common coating they use is called Aurora Borealis but there are plenty of other coatings they use too which makes for really unique crystals.

Glass beads: They are just glass with no special treatments added like swarovski, however some may have metallic coatings that are applied at various places on them. We should not forget about how amazing Murano glass is though, they are true artisans and really take pride in what they do.

For the best result you should use the Delica seed beads. They are uniformly cut and will fit together closer and neater than the Toho seed beads could.

You can use a lot of beads, but seed beads would work nicely. There are a lot of sizes, colors and finishes.

Use glass beads that are not dyed or coated with some kind of finish. The dye can leach out and ruin the knitting, and the coating can come off when the item is cleaned. Also, some beads can lose their color when exposed to the sun, so if in doubt, contact the vendor of the beads. Also make sure the bead has a hole large enough to accommodate the size of the yarn. Metal beads can be used if the metal does not react to the skin of the wearer or to the detergents used to clean the garment (such as gold). Same with gemstones, both precious and semi-precious.

Question
What size closed jump ring should I use with lobster claw clasp?
I want closed rings due to my friends and I like the lobster claw but not the regular jump ring as it sometimes comes off and the little faster that you usually use with lobster claw is too hard for me to fasten & unfasten by mystelf.

I wouldn't use a jump ring at all. They come open. I would use a split ring maybe 7mm in diameter. Not sterling silver because when you bend it open it will lose some of it's shape. A split ring will only come open again if you WANT it to.

Why use a lobster claw at all, unless you want to pair lobster claws, one at each end of your piece? Or try S-clasps or barrel clasps. Not a jump ring on any of them.
