the price for the jewelry you make is calculated like this; (cost of goods + labor) x *overhead = retail price.

*overhead is usually 25 to 35%

I would say to add up the cost of the materials you use, labor (maybe $10/hr), and mark-up (maybe consider the difficulty of the piece or jut a flat $ amount). Remember to consider that the person is buying a one-of-a-kind item.

answer 3
For small, quickly made items such as earrings, I add the price of materials + $10 for me +, if in a show, 1/20 the cost of show entry fee. For large, upscale, intricate, expensive items that take considerable time to craft, I pay myself at rate of $0.75/minute.

A website I found online indicated that using the price of materials as your cost... multiply times 2 for wholesale, times 3 or 4 for retail. This is just a place to start. Depends on your area.

answer 5
I keep track of the exact cost of making the piece. I set my price by tripling the cost-this pays me back for the initial cost, gives me money to buy new materials, and the last third is my profit. If I have spent alot of time on it, I might add an hourly wage.

My best guess (without seeing a sample) is that the design includes small dots or bumps -- granules.
I picked photo from Artbeads.com's fancy headpins and attached it.

Question
How do I organize/label beads?
With so many many purchased long ago, it never occured to me to label everything by cost, type of metal or stone, etc. What is the best way?

Through much trial and error I have come up with a way to organize my beads and keep track of the prices, size, type, etc. I purchased several "bead boxes" that have 17 compartments. I use 1/2"x3/4" white labels (purchased at office supply store) in order to mark each bin with the price and size of the bead. I have the beads seperated by style (glass, stone, shell, wood, metal, etc.) and then by color. For my Swarovski crystals, I included a small sheet of paper with the color of the crystal in each bin. I then used a label maker to print out the type of bead that is in each box and put it on the end of the bead box. I'm still working on getting my beads organized, but this seems like the most effective way that I've tried. I also cut small pieces of foam board to help maximize space.

Question
The costume is red and black, what color swarovski rhinestones should I use.
It is for a solo dance and I want the rhinestones to reflect the red and black of the costume.

I think it would depend on the 'mood' you wish to convey for the dance. Red is energetic & firey while black is mysterious and sophisticated.
Also think about the venue is it a large stage or small? Red would play better in a big space while black would show up just fine in a smaller place.

Question
What is the best way to organize beads?
For example, do you seperate the pendants from all others? Do you keep "like"colors together? How about size? I have such a hard time figuring out if I should keep same colors together, or by size and type. Help!!

I keep all my beads in organizers by color, all wire is in another container and so forth with my findings, crimps and clasps. I also keep the pricing label with each item, so when I create a new project, I know what a portion of my cost is.

The easiest way to start is by creating a shop on Etsy, they only charge 20 cents per listing and each listing will expire in 3 months.

Check with your state to find out if you need a business license to sell online. I would think every state would require you collect and report Sales Tax. Again, check with your county sales tax dept for thier rules/regs.

Take the best pictures you can, remember the internet is a visual medium and you need to show your jewelry in the best way possible in the pictures and descriptions you use. Good Luck!
