Question
How do I reduce tarnishing in my shop?
I am in a building where bread is baked daily and my silver tarnishes to a gold hue within 2 days. I have far too much silver to bag each piece daily, what else can I do?

In short, the silver tarnishes based on the various compounds (sulfur is a big one but there are others) in the air.

Take some clear plastic bins (think of the kind at Target with lids but I'm not thinking of lids).

Attach several anti tarnish strips to the inside of a bin. Anti Tarnish strips work on neutralizing the offending compounds in the air.

Put the bin over the top of each worktray, work station, etc. that you use. Or put the tray in a larger bin.

You can vary the size of the bin and number of anti tarnish strips based on size of the area to be covered.

You'll have to experiment with the number of strips. They don't last forever as they are involved in a chemical reaction when they neutralize the chemicals in the air.

It won't be as good as bagging, but it will essentially be limiting the contact with the air and the anti tarnish strips should be able to neutralize the offending compounds in the air.

You can get an anti tarnish cloth at your jewelry supply house. Sew it to make it into a bag and slide your silver into it when you are done for the day. My piece is about a yard long. You can use selica packets the kind in new handbags, leather coats and shoes. Put them in a zip lock bag and put your pieces into it, seal it when you aren't using the silver. Other than these I can't think of anything else.

Here's a simple solution, use a large crimp like, SS-CRM 12 or 13. A dab of glue at the loop, slide these in place, flattened out with pliers. It looks smooth and professional.

I don't know if this is the best way, but the way I do it is, make a wrapped loop at the end of a wire about 4" long. slip the leather into the loop, fold the end of the leather around to meet the other end. Hold the wire in the same direction as the leather, and begin winding it around both pieces of leather. This will leave the loop at the end to add a clasp or what ever you like. Make about 4 to 5 wraps, you can make a spiral to decorate it or just leave it. It holds well. I don't have a picture of my bracelets yet.

I usually start by:
-selecting the size of knitting needle,
- pick the color of yarn to match the beading,
- make sure the beadhole is the size of the yarn
-layout the pattern on my story board using beads only.
Then I just make my standard chain stitch being careful to count each, then maybe the 10 stitch(depend on pattern) stop that stutch at the loop, apply the bead onto that loop, then follow through to complete the chain stitch and repeat the steps until your patteren is complete. Of course you can play with the chain stopping and adding beads as you like...be creative. I enjoy what I now call, "Knit-Beading." I hope I have been of help. I will try to upload one I did using yarn and shells.

I use a craft drill called a Dremel. It has different sizes of bits to make depending on the size holes you need. It is very easy and safe to use. I bought mine at Lowes.

You can use 2 crimps for each end of each strand of the bracelet or you can use a large crimp bead or tube and pass both strands through it, and then crimp it of course like you normally would.

If the strands are leather, you can use an end crimp with a clasp or loop on, the type that you just crimp down with your pliers so the strand or cord gets squeezed. You just have to ensure that the crimp/clasp end will be the right width for your 2 strands/cords.

You could then "hide" the crimping with a cone shaped metal bead so the strands will be coming out from the wide side of the cone. Good luck...its not too hard when you start doing it, the thinking, of how to do it is usually harder than doing it. You can get all these supplies from Artbeads.com .

Sounds like you have a color chart for placement already. Securing one end with the thread coming up thru back of fabric. I'd string 4 or 5 (or more) beads on my thread. Following the contour of pattern for even spacing. Then attach like buttons, needle down thru fabric, and up thru hole of each bead.

You can store them in anti-tarnish bags, boxes or you can store them with an anti-tarnish paper square. Be sure that the bags or boxes are air-tight.

You can purchase polishing cloths and liquids that remove the tarnishing, alternatively, you could soak the beads in hot water, a little vinegar and baking soda but it is a little tedious. Rubbing the metal helps too.

Be sure that the metal is not plated because the coating will come off. Good luck.

Question
What is the easiest way to use a beading bowl?
I saw an instructor use a beading bowl to string the seed beads and it looked so easy and awesome bought one. It is not as easy to use as it looked on TV. The little hooked wire is very temperamental and I am having a time catching 2-4 beads let alone a whole string of them. What is the trick to getting it to work prpmptly?

There's not an easy solution just practice practice practice! It took me about an hour of tinkering with mine to begin to see better results, and longer to get it going properly. You've just got to get the angle just right and the only way you'll get it is with experimentation.
I do French beaded flowers and needed a ton of beads strung. Two hours in, I had about 4 ft of beads strung... 3 hours in it was more like 10 feet. Just keep at it, you'll get it!
